The Package

Gift Fine Art PRINT Abstract Mixed media collage Drawing by rcolo, $10.00

The package arrives
at the rooster`crow
to snatch me from
 a dark labyrinth
which had no exit
with the door`slam
of an angry cell door

The courier has flown
so what’s to be done
except to pick it up
careful as if alive
set it on the counter
delicate slice it open
to find what lies inside

Twenty`four envelopes
with sixty index`cards
each lined unwritten
without instruction
offer no explanation
as to whom the sender
or why the urgent alarm

“Ah, no wonder
So many poets are addicted
To detective novels
From the drugstore.” ~ Hayden Carruth

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
