Was a time
we learned words
attached words to images
to help us not forget things
the subtle shades of the sea
on a bright summer’s day
going deathly gray
in the gale

Every shade
with its own color
every color its own name
the same sea never the same
Oh the inadequacy of words
trying to capture the wind
dancing upon water
in moon`light

Comes a time
we lose those words
detach words from reality
retreat back into ignorance
where any water is but wet
& home where we’re kept
blind deaf and mute
far from home

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
