On Loving

Image result for abstract art apples

You asked me
about apples and
I said granny`smiths
make the best pies
if you like tart

but for eating
nothing can beat
the sweet honey`crisp
for sheer crunch
and for flavor

So I asked you
about apples and
you peeled a jona`gold
slipped the sliver
into my mouth

and said to me
Be quiet just chew!
at which I knew loving
isn’t about knowing
it’s about doing

“the way you are with me that’s
the whole of it and it is as
absolute as anything can be.” ~ James Laughlin, Absolute Love

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!

  1. Reminds me of a story I heard (somewhere) of a man visiting an Indian reservation and asked a local about the furry friend sitting at his feet, “What kind of dog is that?”
“A good dog.” was the matter-of-fact reply.
