The Night

The night
is as the sea
it swallows the
light in shadows
stretches moments
into sleepless hours
We sink into its deeps
the kelp reaches out
entangling our feet
in memory’s vines
we cannot escape
neither can we
fall nor rise

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!

  1. I wish I had read this before I wrote my version of night. As always, you dazzle me with profound verse.

Like the dark night of the soul, or purgatory, or, dare I say, this confinement to earth. These states all for surrendering and waiting on God to move me (you).
