A Healthy Fear

Michael Morgenstern

I love the sea
yet do not venture`
out on it but in a boat
Something is dangerous
there about its depths
and I was not born
with any gills

We’re friends
the open`sea & I
in weather fair or foul
She hears my confessions
in strictest confidence
Upon absolution
all’s forgotten

I love friends
yet do not venture`
far into shallow reefs
where coral can gash feet
and blood will attract
sharks who’ve no`
grasp of mercy

“To understand another means to love him —
not in the erotic sense but in the sense of reaching out
to him and of overcoming the fear of losing oneself.” ~ Erich Fromm

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
