Dreamers

“O Lord, all my longing is known to you;
      my sighing is not hidden from you.
   My heart throbs, my strength fails me;
         as for the light of my eyes –
         it also has gone from me.
   My friends and companions stand aloof,
      and my neighbors stand far off.
          It is for you, O Lord, that I wait;
          It is you, O Lord, who will answer.” ~ Psalm 38:9-11,15

The boy dreams
of being the man
Waits impatiently
to be old enough
to drive to shave

The pencil marks
on the door`jams
track his sprouting
Beside them dates
to record his pace

Old men dream
of our boy`hood
Wait patiently for
our bowl of soup
with no appetite

The pill bottles
at our bed`sides
tell of our failings
The higher doses
record our pace

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
