“Contend, O Lord, with those
    who contend with me;
       fight against those
        who fight against me.
 Take hold of shield and buckler,
     and rise up to help me!
 Draw the spear and javelin
     against my pursuers;
Say to my soul,
       ‘I am your salvation.'” ~ Psalm 35:1-3

We are conflicted
within our own selves
Of two minds on matters
at our center of being
shadows wrestling

Like twin brothers
holding on to the heels
of siblings throughout life
each asking dominance
A father’s approval

Id and super`ego
going after each other
in their unabated contest
leaving little love left
for loving others

We despise self
in the name of love
as we pamper ourselves
in the name of spite
Twisted & torn

From ourselves,
Lord, deliver us!

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
