The white house
is decorated with cranes
neatly folded origami cranes
deftly folded by the deft hands
of the sycophants of the god
each bird when unfolded
marred by a lie

No sooner a lie
is caught than another
crane miraculously appears
Violence dressed up as peace
Fear masquerading as hope
Control covering chaos
Usual business

Everyone lies!
you say And it is true
The biggest lie being I swear
I’m telling you the whole truth
Remember the president who
said I am not a crook!
Truth is he was

“All I have is a voice
To undo the folded lie,
The romantic lie in the brain
Of the sensual man-in-the-street
And the lie of Authority
Whose buildings grope the sky” ~ W.H. Auden

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
