Fan the Flame!

Candlelight of Love and Blessing

    Candlelight of Love and Blessing

There is a wind
blowing in the land
Retrenchment is its name
In its face our character gets
revealed for others to see
Hate is in the streets
An angry wind

Still the flame
of grace flutters faint
in the hearts of all those
who’d love neighbor as self
It is time for that flame
to take to the hands
as hospitality

The strangers
stand at our borders
Hate will make terrorists
of any who have been hated
Love will make brothers
of any who are loved
Fan the flame!

“I know that I have life
only insofar as I have love.
I have no love
except it come from Thee.
Help me, please, to carry
this candle against the wind.” ~ Wendell Berry

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!

  1. strangely enough, that wind of hate may only serve to fan the flame of love… Who was it said ‘for every action there will be an equal and opposite reaction’…
