Civilization

Was a time
civilized`men
built the world
When great nations
made little ones great
and by the makings
made the world
a Civilization
Was a time
   At least so it appeared
   to us in our innocence

Came a time
civilized`men
razed the world
When peace`keepers
masked war`mongers
and by their mischief
leveled the world
to Wasteland
Came a time
At least so it will appear
   to us by our compliance

“The Lords of War sell the earth to buy fire,
They sell the water and air of life to buy fire.
They are little men grown great by willingness
to drive whatever exists into its perfect absence.
Their intention to destroy any place is solidly founded
upon their willingness to destroy every place.” ~ Wendell Berry

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
