I Set`Out Today

I set`out today
to walk a different way
To choose a different path
from that my footsteps
took yesterday

I was so weary
of the suburban sprawl
The new match`box houses
the flowerbeds to match
matching SUVs

Among the trees
there lies the faint track
where does and fawns walk
I’ll follow where it leads
from tree to tree

First the silence
of wilderness as it was
engulfs me like an envelope
Swallows me in sacred
quiet sanctuary

Then the song
the strings of fir limbs
weeping softly in the trees
With them bird`songs
of eternal`love

“That I shall love you always.
No matter what party is in power;
No matter what temporarily expedient
      combination of allied interests wins the war;
Shall love you always.” ~ Edna St Vincent Millay

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
