“The heavens are telling the glory of God;
    and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
       Day to day pours forth speech,
       night to night declares knowledge.
 There is no speech, nor are there words;
    their voice is not heard, yet
    their voice goes out through all the earth
       and their words to the end of the world.” ~ Psalm 19:1-4

How long
have poets stood
out in the winter night
watching the stars emerge
growing nearer clearer
in brighter light
by the hour

Yet we know
they are moving
away from us at speeds
increasing with each night
already light`years gone
from the spaces
we see them

As the Poet
spins these worlds
in their majestic orbits
expanding our vocabulary
words we cannot spell
The Poet swirling
in our souls

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!

  2. Glorious is right. I see in your writing the very understanding of the cosmos and not just the moment or the individual.
