The Promise

“He reached down from on high,
       he took me;
   He drew me out of the mighty waters.
   He delivered me from my strong enemy,
      and from those who hated me;
         for they were too mighty for me.
   He brought me out into a broad place;
   He delivered me because he delighted in me” ~ Psalm 18:16-19

From deep
in winter’s cave
of her self`loathing
her coat matted
from sleep

A thought
stirs her dream
The old bear turns`
over in the cold
dark night

It is as tho
a candle was lit
in a distant window
and in that light
old warmth

The memory
etched on gene
A promise inscribed
onto thick hide
beyond aging

“I am delighted in you!”

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
