“‘Because the poor are despoiled,
      because the needy groan,
         I will now rise up,’ says the Lord;
‘I will place them in the safety for which they long.’
The promises of the Lord are promises that are pure,
silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
purified seven times.” ~ Psalm 12:5-6

Where are your papers
the uniformed`man asks
knowing well I have none
Without papers I am no one
Where do I get my papers
I ask the uniformed`man
You get papers at home

But I don’t have a home
I tell the man in a uniform
And that is not my problem
without a home you are no one
Without papers and a home
you’re in the wrong queue
Go and wait over there

Why are you in this line
this uniformed`man asks
knowing well I am no one
with no papers or no home
You’ll have to wait in here
this uniformed`man says
until we form a new line

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
