Praises Be!

Jan Richardson

Jan Richardson

“O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
in the morning I plead my case to you and watch.
For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
Evil will not sojourn with you.” ~ Psalm 5:3-4

The January sun
rises over a frozen world
Praise the sun not for its heat
but for bathing the Sound
in its fierce glow

Etched the islands
as if with threads of gold
the water as if of molten silver
Praise the colors of dawn
Let there be light!

Earth is sanctuary
where Creator & creature
commune in mutual adoration
Praise be the conversation
Let there be peace!

God sees the heart
Hears the soul’s longing
Praise be prayer beyond words
answered in sacraments
of water and of air

May my every word
each convoluted thought
conceive some act of kindness
A salve for some wound
Praise the gift of love!

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
