Seeing the Good

“There are many who say,
‘O that we might see some good!
Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!’
You have put gladness in my heart more than
when
their grain and wine abound.” ~ Psalm 4:6-7

Good news is hard to find
It’s usually not in the headlines
which focus on the sensationally bad
the explosion of another bomb
indictment of another bank

But scroll`on down the page
You’re likely to discover it there
tucked in between the sports & obits
the story of an act of kindness
a self sacrificed for another

It takes courage to believe
good outweighs evil in this life
To seek a friend in a stranger’s face
the willingness to lend a hand
extend a cup of cold water

But when we dare seek it
when we find it the spirit rises
in our hearts like the morning sun
over the shadows of the night
Day unfolds like a flower

Good news is hard to find
Were we to consider it a verb
rather than as a noun just perhaps
we might discover that it lies
right at our very fingertips

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!

  1. during our trip last week, my wife was accidentally pitched from her wheelchair to the ground – half a dozen strangers immediately came to her aid and stayed with us till my daughter arrived – good news, indeed
