On Christmas Eve

At times
a truce is peace
not for the long term
but at least for the moment
not in the everywhere
but at least here
and now

Who knows
why we fight
our way through life
Something deep in our code
when tribes in caves
fought for food
or honor

Yet still
nations rage
against each other
and brother against brother
barks words that kill
Is there an hour
for peace?

“Tomorrow is Christmas;
if you don’t fight, we won’t.”

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
