On Thanksgiving

If I cannot
offer thanks
for the sunbeam
I will not give thanks
for the wind`fall
if it blesses
my door

If I cannot
say grace when
the plate is empty
I’ll not think to pray
if the cornucopia
is overflowing
my table

If I cannot
bless the finch
singing on the wire
I’ll not hear the angel
who comes to sing
the benediction
at my death

“The sunbeam comes upon this earth of mine
with arm out-stretched and stands at my door
the livelong day to carry back to thy feet clouds
made of my tears and sighs and songs . . .” ~ Rabindranath Tagore

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!

  4. There are so many wonderful pages, I get lost. But when I find your work all over again, I am reminded of your brilliance.
