The preacher
is no storyteller
Oh he has all the facts right
He simply doesn’t believe the story
hence no one believes him
He’s a manager
of the Book

The Gospels
do not manage well
Their stories are a lit fuse
sizzling down under our long ears
Once painted we’ve had it!
Stories will undo us
if story`told

A Story`Teller
believes her own story
Tells it as tho she’s a witness
of one of the world’s great wonders
A camel thru the needle’s eye
What is not`quite`yet
in the what`is

The prophet
lives within his story
A man of a way not of a cloth
A Story`Teller throws open the gate
and then simply leaves town
setting creatures free
to tell tales

” . . . no[t] till the poets among us can be
‘literalists of the imagination’—above
insolence and triviality and can present
for inspection, ‘imaginary gardens with real toads in them’,
shall we have it . . .” ~ Marianne Moore

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
