Gifted We Are

Gifted we are
without a doubt
all who take up a pen
or pencil to fill the page
with other men’s words
learnt from the books
others have writ
of used words

is not our gift
We’re but imitators
of poets gone before us
arranging  rearranging
ancient vocabularies
Planting seeds
in fresh rows

What flower
a garden grows
be it rose be it thistle
is the Gift of the Creator
Our gift is its celebration
and its presentation
Poets die while
poems live

“And yet no leaf or grain is filled
By work of ours, the field is tilled
And left to grace. That we may reap,
Great work is done while we’re asleep” ~ Wendell Berry

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!

  1. I so often feel I channel poems instead of really writing them. Enjoyed your post once again, Peter.
