On Nature

At dawn and dusk
   the light just emerging
   the light just fading
All the world around me
   visible in silhouette

Ah the shape of the curve
of the ridge up behind me
Oh the graceful outline
   of the island before me

At dawn the warm glow
of the sun at its rising
      bathing all in its amber
The deer stepping out
   from the still`dark woods
      toward their apple trees

At dusk the soft shimmer
of the sun at its setting
      birthing a rose`garden
The last fishing boats
   scrubbing down decks
      on their way home

Life is its own best landscape
and Nature its own best artist

“Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature.
It will never fail you.”
 ~ Frank Lloyd Wright

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
