There is a loneliness
at the center of every life
that longs for like`mindedness

True friendship
is such kindred`ness of spirit
where loneliness is embraced
and like`mindedness explored

Friendship is a truly safe place
where we are not measured by
strained standards of expectation
that strangle our other relationships

Within friendship
we are held unconditionally in love
we are empowered immeasurably by grace

Known but never exhausted
Received but never consumed
Free to fail but never to fall

Within friendship we are always held
God has created us for friendship
for intimacy that heals loneliness

Even God has a loneliness at the very center
which is healed a little more each time
we love each other as friends

“Two are better than one, for if they fall,
one will lift up the other.” ~ Ecclesiastes

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!

  2. One should be so grateful to have a friend like that. I’ve only ever had that close, unconditional relationship with my parents and my husband, but the parent-daughter and husband-wife relationships are not the same, in my eyes, as the friend-friend. Is it too late to hope for this?
