Out of Whack

Things in the nation
I would have to concede
are completely out of whack
thanks in large part to people
who think they can self`govern
when in fact they cannot even think
beyond programming their iPhones
or locating the nearby McDonald’s
people who think a constitution
is just a bowel movement
and liberty but a licence
to do what you please

Was a time we cared
about our neighborhood
cared about the education
the kids got in our community
a time when we stood up for good
not just for ourselves but for others
for the needs of the least and not just
for the wants of the most powerful
Something happened on the way
when our ‘we’ turned into ‘me’
and ‘I’ no longer cared about
‘you’ when ‘you’ became
just one of ‘them’

“If you can see things out of whack, then you
can see how things can be in whack.” ~ John Irving

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
