On Naming Things

Naming things
is a God`given grace
When God created this world
he brought creation to the creature

so Adam in naming it might
share in the creative act
so that Eve by calling it might
have creative power over it

In naming each other we
still participate in God’s creativity
still share in God’s divine authority
for we are Adam we are Eve

In knowing my name
you hold little more than my shadow
In speaking my name
you voice the mystery of who I am

You hold in your hand the awesome power
to draw me into the circle of your life
to live with you there
in a house called love

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
