God of all goodness
You who in your great mercy
have touched our lives with blessing
we pause to consider the gift that is our life . . .
We thank you for our own being:
The carefully tuned mystery that is our body
legs arms back hands feet fingers toes heart brain
The ingenious masterpiece that is our mind
thought memory sense analysis choice speech sound
The delicately wired miracle that is our spirit
reflection communion solitude community work love
We thank you for the being of others:
The nurturing circle of love that is our family
sister brother parent child husband wife uncle aunt
The unconditional life`lines that are our friendships
         colleagues collaborators kindred spirits soul-mates
The inclusive community that is our neighborhood
Asian African Indo`European Muslim Hindu Christian
We thank you for the wonder of creation:
The monumental foundation stones of natural order
sky earth mountain sea river valley field cavern pond
The green & growing things that make earth a home
forest tree shrub blossom seed leaf bark thatch thistle
The teeming living things that seek a home in the earth
eagle salmon beaver lamb grub cougar woman man
We thank you for the conscious chronology of time:
The maze of yesterdays that live on in our memories
maple leaves snow showers birthings deaths poetry
The slate of today that challenges our deeper engagement
chores walks recipes guests stories phone calls prayers
The dream of tomorrows that are ours only by grace
         sunsets surf`sounds a grand`child a fish on the line
For all these good gifts, O God,
we give you great thanks                                                                                                     now and forever. Amen.

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
