My Neighbor

Mrs Nature
is my neighbor
she’s built no fences
so as to keep her leaves
from tumbling into my yard
nor has she hung a gate
to her blackberries
as if they were
her treasure

A free spirit
is my neighbor
she keeps her pets
on leashes quite invisible
not one of them is licensed
and yet they come to her
when she whistles
thru the trees
in the wind

All she owns
is public domain
no patent on autumn
take whatever you want
from her colorful portfolio
as your own for a season
no fear of litigation
she has plenty
more in store

“A poet ought not to pick nature’s pocket. Let him borrow,
and so borrow as to repay by the very act of borrowing.” ~ Samuel Taylor Coleridge

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
