Who Are You?

You ask
Who are you?
I struggle to answer
For I am not the man
who lives at this address
Neither am I the man
who is portrayed in
my curriculum

I am
not the husband
of an intelligent wife
Nor father to children
who share my last name
I am not a best friend
you call at midnight
because you feel

I am
not the fisherman
who smokes the fish
you lick your fingers for
Nor am I the one who baits
your hook guts your fish
then fillets the bones
so you won’t choke
on them

I am
not the old man
reading the soup labels
in the supermarket aisle
Nor am I the congregant
worshiping next to you
weeping while he sings
Jesus loves me this
I know!

You ask
Who are you?
I struggle to answer
For I am just a little boy
dressed in old man’s suits
who apart from what he
does still doesn’t know
how he got here
or why

“For the first time in 4 billion years a living creature had contemplated himself and heard with a sudden, unaccountable loneliness, the whisper of wind in the night reeds.” ~ Loren Eiseley

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
