It is the season
Out come the Talking Heads
Politicians & political prognosticators
The bitter conservatives convinced as they
are the nation is on a fast`track to hell
certain of some prescription
Fools without finesse

Fools without defense
is what we are attending them
as though their celebrity qualified them
to lead this polyglot of international riffraff
once dedicated to the ideal of community
each now determinedly tribal
Fierce in our own folly

Your gestation & mine
merely took nine long months
Seeking a consensus over a figure`head
to speak on behalf of our Funding Fathers
now takes nothing less than four years
permitting the candidates time
to master incongruity

To the winner the prize
A steel cage sealed by 365 locks
in his/her own reality TV series show
into which she/he is to be hand`cuffed
and tossed overboard at sea just to see
how long it takes the magician
to escape asphyxiation

Brought to you by – you got it folks – Viagra!
That little blue pill that never lets you down!

“Nowhere, perhaps, is there so little conversation […] It is all movement and noise, like the water gurgling out of the bath – down the waste. Yes, down the waste.”
~ Aldous Huxley, on visiting America

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!

  1. you’ve elicited a hysterical hallelujah from me – with our “first in the nation primary” we are already crawling with candidates and inundated with campaign phonecalls

  2. Maureen says:

Your opinion of politicians sounds a bit like mine – currently ours are throwing away our sovereignty for a few handfuls of silver…
