Between the Words

If you want to know
where it is we live you’ll
have to look between words
And sometimes even that won’t
be enough You need to peek
into the tiny crevices that
lie between the letters

‘There’s nothing there!’
I can already hear you say
‘It’s the emptiness of space
that holds everything in place!’
But how can you be certain
it’s not her or maybe him
or God forbid even me?

She is the soft light
that falls from the dawn
he the haunting sound rain
makes when sweeping the sea
And I? Why I’m that lump
you feel in your throat
when all words fail

If you want to know
where it is we live you’ll
have to look between words
And sometimes even that won’t
be enough You need to peek
into the tiny crevices that
lie between the letters

“Art is never about its content. It’s about its scaffolding.”

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
