To the politician
words are the currency
paving the highway to power

To the academic
they are the wrenches
loosening the bolts of truth

To the plumber
they are the solder
sweating the copper of trade

To the preacher
they are the calculator
providing the sums of persuasion

To the banker
they are the ripcords
guaranteeing golden parachutes

To the doctor
they are the anesthetic
numbing the news of catastrophe

To the poet
words are the knives
opening the shells of oysters

“Poetry is an independent ambassador for conscience:
it answers to no one, it crosses borders without a passport,
and it speaks the truth.”

~ Ellen Hinsey

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
