The clue is like a Rolek

The answer was ersatz

I have to confess I didn’t get it

although I am certain it is right

I remember ersatz coffee

which was called Postum

I Can’t Believe It’s Not

Butter too is but ersatz

My cardiologist swears off it!

Better-a-little-butter than ersatz

I’ve always known God

made butter buttercups

Salt comes from the sea

except for salt-substitute

which is not salt at all but ersatz

Like Arsenic & Old Lace I’d say

A certain way for relatives

to get an early inheritance

No! Give me Sea-salt

ground at the salt-mill

It makes even a salmon salivate

and a glass of any good Cabernet

My cardiologist will say

Two glasses are better!

I have lived one life

I don’t want another

if this living is to be but ersatz

This life is too short to dance

with any fat women

or fish with worms

About Peter Notehelfer

I'm a retired people person who now finds the time to watch the little details of the world without worrying about being watched by anyone . . . I live on an Island north of Seattle with my wife named Ellen, a yellow dog named McGee, a yellow cat named Gatzby, and four fine chickens . . . I read fiction, bake bread, smoke salmon, and fish whenever the weather allows . . . Oh, and yes, I try to write a poem every day simply to avoid senility!
